Gary Mayor Rudy Clay visited 21st Century Charter School to speak to the student body on Monday, August 30th. With more than 370 students in the gym, from kindergarten to twelfth grade, the Mayor emphasized the importance of literacy, encouraged students to graduate and become successful, and ended with a question-and-answer session.

During the course of the speech, the Mayor told students that, while he has not yet made an official announcement, he will be running for re-election in the spring. After a question from a 21st Century freshman, the mayor explained that his platform will focus on three points: keeping Gary safe, beautifying the city by demolishing abandoned buildings, and fixing the roads. Other student questions ranged from the work of a mayor, to city funding, to the dilapidated church across the street from 21st Century Charter School, which they mayor explained is protected by the Historical Preservation Society.

Although the Mayor could not stay long, Principal Angela D. West invited him back to speak to the high school Government and Economics class later in the school year. Mrs. West said she was pleased with the convocation and students’ attentiveness and thoughtful questions.
