On September 30th, 2010, 21st Century Charter School at Gary welcomed twelve colleges and the National Guard and United States Army into our school for a 6th-12th grades college fair. The following twelve colleges provided our students with valuable information regarding their programs and opportunities:

  • Ivy Tech Community College
  • Purdue University Lafayette
  • Purdue University Calumet
  • Valparaiso University
  • Ashford University
  • ITT Tech
  • Indiana University Northwest
  • Everest College
  • Ball State University
  • South Suburban College
  • Wabash College
  • Taylor University

Prior to the fair, students received a biography on each of the colleges in order for them to prioritize which school’s table they’d like to visit first. Many of our students prepared themselves by determining what type of college they’d like to attend, whether they’d prefer a small or large college, what types of studies they might pursue, whether they want to stay close to home or go somewhere far away, what kinds of sports they’d like to see at a college and whether they want an urban or rural environment.

Once they narrowed down their preferences, they conducted preliminary research on a few of the college fair schools that interest them. Our students gained access to all of the viable information these colleges and organizations had to offer in a brief period of time. They were able to explore college options quickly and efficiently.

Students received a better perspective on where they want to further their education and the resources they need to achieve their goals. College admissions professionals were able to provide them with factual knowledge of life on campus. Students collected brochures and applications for admissions and financial aid for each of the colleges.

Many students found the best thing about the college fair was the one-on-one contact they got with college representatives. The college fair was exciting for all the students and they eagerly took advantage of this great opportunity.
