21st Century Charter School’s first-ever Rock the Block Party was a great success. The event brought together students, their families, and members of the community for a full day of fun. Due to rain and wind, the Block Party moved into the 21st Century Charter School gym, where the games, rides, basketball, and music went on from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, despite the dreary weather.

Children of all ages loved the giant blow-up obstacle course and bungee run, and there were nonstop lines to get on the rides. Block Party participants also enjoyed playing games to win prizes. A basketball shooting game, football game, and beanbag toss game were popular as students tried to win bouncy balls, stuffed animals, and other toys and trinkets.

3-on-3 basketball tournaments ran all day, starting with teams of students in grades 3-5, then middle school, and finally high school teams. The basketball competitions ended with a free throw contest.

Students and staff members also played music all afternoon. At one point, the music stopped for a performance by the 21st Century Charter School drum line and middle school band.

21st Century staff grilled hot dogs and Polish sausages, and the concession stand had other snacks and drinks for sale.

Various community organizations and vendors also played a part in the Rock the Block Party. Cool Smiles, Southshore Health & Rehabilitation, and D’essence shared information on their services and products. Kaufman Chiropractic offered back massages, and Beautiful Pictures took photographs that were printed on site.

At 4:00 pm, students went outdoors for a moment to participate in a balloon release in honor of those affected by cancer. Students and families had been invited to write messages in memory of those who have fought cancer, and those messages were attached to the balloons. After a countdown, the rainy sky filled with brightly colored, quickly disappearing spots as students released the balloons into the air. Proceeds from the Rock the Block Party will go to the American Cancer Society.
